On this weekend’s Behind the Mitten Show with Amy Sherman and John Gonzalez -- 

This week we travel to Gaylord and visit with our good friends at Treetops, Michigan’s Most Spectacular Resort. They are hosting their annual Grill on the Hill barbecue event this Saturday, May 4, and we got all the details. Plus, lots about golf, equipment, new food menus, and more on this episode of Behind the Mitten.

We start off with an all-resort update from Treetops general manager Barry Owens, who is a regular on BTM. The Treetops team has been working hard all winter to be ready for the busy summer golf season.

While winter was a bit of a bust, the lack of snow means that courses will be opening earlier than ever, and that is a great thing for Treetops. Tim Maddie, Director of Recreation Maintenance, and Mark Hogan, Recreation Manager at Treetops join us to talk all about golf. Course conditions are looking good across all five championship courses, including the famous par-3 Threetops course.

New food and beverage director Jessie King is joining Treetops this season, after spending a few years working on Mackinac Island. She brings a new energy to the resort, and is working on menu and restaurant changes that you'll see throughout the season. Tune in to hear what its like to manage the food scene at a large property like Treetops.

Grill on the Hill is one of the resort's signature events, and it's been reimagined for 2024 in partnership with Ebels General Store. We have Mr. Owens back on, along with our buddy Stephanie Adkins who works with Ebels. (Inside tip: You might remember her from when she was a reporter on TV 9&10 News).

This mouth-watering event will feature a fierce BBQ competition, and tasting event, plus awards and prizes. Individual teams will showcase their grilling expertise in a lively competition, while guests get to indulge in delicious BBQ, interact with expert grillers, and enjoy live music, drinks, and entertainment suitable for all ages. You'll also be able to hang out with Amy if you go, as she is one of the judges for this smoke show.
