In 1985, lightweight contender Jeff Bumpus fought Greg Haugen (who broke Bumpus' orbital bone), Vinny Pazienza (who cracked his collarbone), and undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez (who crushed his nose in the first round, like Apollo Creed did to Rocky), all within a five-month period.
He lost all three fights (though he took Haugen and Pazienza the distance),and never won a world title, but Bumpus came away from a nine-year, 40-fight career (23 in his first 23 months as a pro) with a spectacular array of stories, some of which he shared with us
