We recently talked about this film in our “2001: A Space Odyssey” episode and compared ape makeup between the two having both been released the same year. (Planet of the Apes took home a honorary Academy Award for their make up while 2001 confused audiences about whether the apes were real or not.) In this episode we talk about how they made this inventive film on such a tight budget, the dawning of “ape mania” and the franchise it spawned and the powerful politics of this film that are as relevant today as the day it was made.
