"Old Father Christmas" is a short story by J.H. Ewing seen through the eyes of an eight-year-old boy and his little sister Patty, who have never seen a Christmas-tree and know Father Christmas only from a picture-book. When a white-bearded old man carrying a small fir tree passes through their lane on Christmas Eve, the children are utterly convinced they have met the man himself. What follows is a quietly magical evening of tea, cake, and candlelight — and a loyalty to a beloved illusion that neither child is willing to surrender.
