mostra di piùRick Henshaw of the Catholic League spoke out after the Obama Administration's Department of Health and Human Services said that a California law which forces churches and other religious organizations to pay for elective abortions is not a violation of the Weldon Amendment.
The Hyde/Weldon Amendment states that "governmental bodies receiving federal funds [are prohibited] from discriminating against those who decline to take part in abortion or abortion coverage.”
The Obama HHS stated the California law did not violate the Weldon Amendment because “the Weldon Amendment’s protections extend only to health care entities and not to individuals who are patients of, or institutions or individuals, that are insured by, such entities.”
However, the Weldon Amendment states "a physician or other health care professional, a hospital, a provider-sponsored organization, a health maintenance organization, a health insurance plan, or any other kind of health care facility."
One advocate for life stated that the actions of the administration show they are ramping up their war on Christians and religious freedom in their final months.
"Just as the issues with the Little Sisters of the Poor and other groups being forced to provide insurance coverage for abortion inducing drugs," Henshaw told USA Radio News, "it's a war on religious freedom that the HHS is waging on behalf of the Obama administration."
However, Henshaw says this assault on a Constitutionally-protected right is nothing new for the Obama administration.
"The Obama administration has a clear history...on issues that go beyond what we're concerned about," Henshaw said. "[They believe] that they can act in any way they want regardless of what the law says."
Groups challenging the law say the fight against it will continue in court.
