In this episode of Mystery Movie Theatre we watch the cult classic Starship Troopers. A movie based on a book of the same name written in 1959 by Robert A. Heinlein
The Sci-Fi action adventure was released in 1997, directed by Paul Verhoeven and stared Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris
The film had a less than spectacular run at the box office but has gained a large following over time that has in turn led to multiple sequels.
The film also caused quite a stir and there has been many a debate online due to its fascist and Nazi like propaganda content. However 26 years on, it is hard to see how anyone watching Starship Troopers at the time, let alone film critics with knowledge of Verhoeven's previous work, failed to spot that he was doing irony. At one point Neil Patrick Harris wears a uniform so reminiscent of an SS officer’s that apparently he was being called “Doogie Himmler” on set.
In an interview with Empire magazine Verhoeven had this to say “It’s a very rightwing book. And with the movie, we tried, and I think at least partially succeeded, in commenting on that at the same time. It would be ‘Eat your cake and have it.’ All the way through we were fighting with the fascism, the ultra-militarism. All the way through I wanted the audience to be asking, ‘Are these people crazy?’”
The film to this day holds a solid 70% rating from both critics and audience members on Rotten Tomato's.
And with the news that a Hollywood studio is in talks to remake the movie it looks like the Terran federation and its war against the "Bugs" will continue to rage on for many years to come, will you be joining Rico's roughnecks anytime soon?
