In this midweek mini true crime story of Love and Murder: Heartbreak to Homicide, Ky takes us through the  case of 14-year-old Carly Madison Gregg, who allegedly murdered her mother and then invited a friend over to see the body. On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, the Rankin County Sheriff's Office responded to a call in Brandon, Mississippi, where they found 40-year-old Ashley Smiley dead and her husband, Heath Smiley, with a gunshot wound. Heath claimed that Carly had shot him and fled the scene.

Carly was arrested shortly after and charged with murder and attempted murder. Investigators revealed that Carly had allegedly planned to kill her stepfather as well. The case took a turn when Carly's defense claimed she suffered from mental disorders and had a change in medication before the incident. Despite these claims, the prosecution argued that mental illness does not justify taking a life.

Carly, now 15, faces multiple charges and is being evaluated to determine if she is competent to stand trial. The court has decided to keep her in adult detention with a $1 million bond. The trial is scheduled for September, and the state will present evidence including mental health evaluations, medical records, and school disciplinary records.
