What arrives as a “red flag” is often the signal the body already decided must be true in order for the last injury to remain unfinished. The person in front of you becomes the surface the wound uses to finish its own sentence. A red flag, in ordinary language, is a present pattern that has already produced harm or that matches a pattern known to produce harm. When the nervous system is still running the protocol that never stood down, the same surface can be read as evidence that the old cut is about to happen again. The reading feels like detection. The detection is the wound confirming itself. The other person is not required to be the author of the cut for the body to treat them as the continuation of it. False red flags exist when the filter is active. The filter admits only the data that keeps the unfinished event unfinished. Ambiguity, hesitation, ordinary difference, or a tone that once preceded harm get sorted into the “this is the same thing” bin. The bin fills. The listener experiences the filled bin as discernment. What is actually happening is the ear has been retuned so that only confirmation of the prior injury counts as information. Everything else is either noise or incomplete data that must be resolved in the direction of the wound. The person is not necessarily “drawn in” by some external force to mirror the wound. The wound is already the active governance protocol. It selects which frequencies of the other person are allowed to land. The frequencies that match the last injury land cleanly and get treated as proof. The frequencies that do not match are either ignored, re-interpreted until they fit, or used as further evidence that the other person is withholding the truth. The mirror effect is produced by the filter, not by the other person’s intention to reflect anything. Pathologizing the other person is the next step the protocol takes. Once the body has decided the cut is still possible, the listener’s mind supplies the story that makes the decision feel like clear seeing. The story often names the other person as the carrier of the defect. The defect the story names is frequently the same one the listener has not yet finished with themselves. The naming feels like protection. It is the unfinished event using the other person as the place where the event can stay unfinished.
