Lazy Jack is a short story by Joseph Jacobs following Jack, a boy so idle his mother threatens to turn him out unless he earns his keep. Each day Jack works for a different employer and brings home his wages — a penny, a jar of milk, a cream cheese, a cat, a shoulder of mutton — but always carries it the wrong way, losing or ruining everything. His mother's exasperated corrections arrive one day too late, setting up a chain of gloriously predictable mishaps, until one final blunder produces the most unexpected consequence of all.
