Ken Mahoney is a financial advisor with more than three decades of experience, the author of nine investing and retirement books, and President and CEO of Mahoney Asset Management. In this interview, he notes “It’s all been about interest rates” with the stock market lately. The Fitch debt downgrade, the Fed’s “higher for longer” chatter, and troublesome economic data caused markets to stumble in August and September – the latter a month he likes to call “Nowheres-Land”! But he also believes better earnings and gloomy sentiment will combine to fuel a late-year rally – as long as the rate-hiking cycle doesn’t go too deep into “extra innings.”
As for investing strategies and market sectors, Ken has been (rightly) bullish on Big Tech and AI stocks, including Microsoft (MSFT). He has liked the energy sector, and the iShares U.S. Energy ETF (IYE), given the support OPEC+ members like Saudi Arabia are giving crude oil prices via production cuts. On the flip side, Ken is NOT a big fan of airline or auto stocks in general or retailers like Macy’s (M) in particular.
