When I was 16, I agreed to go scuba diving off the coast of Florida—with zero training, no license, and a canoe as our dive boat. What could go wrong? This wild story takes you through the chaos of strapping on a weight belt for the first time, fighting waves while dragging a canoe full of scuba gear, and realizing way too late that I had no idea what I was doing. Things got scary fast when the canoe flipped, the gear scattered, and I got pulled under—still wearing that weight belt. From gasping for air to crawling back onto the beach while lifeguards and strangers thought I was a goner, this was one of the closest calls of my life. Looking back, it’s equal parts terrifying, hilarious, and unforgettable.
