The gun rights group that Katie Couric smeared by deceptively editing their interview in her anti-gun documentary, Under The Gun, is speaking out about the incident. Virginia Citizens Defense League...
mostra di piùVirginia Citizens Defense League President Philip Van Cleave addressed the edit in the video that makes it appear members of his group could not answer when Couric asked “if there are no background checks for gun purchasers, how do you prevent felons or terrorists from purchasing a gun?”
The unedited audio of the interview shows not only did members of the VCDL respond, multiple members provided lengthy answers to the question.
"This went beyond the pale," Van Cleave told USA Radio News. "We feel this damages the reputation of the group. Looking at [the video] you would think we were a bunch of idiots that can't answer a simple question. Just sat there, staring down and looking at the floor, embarrassed that we could not answer the question when that was not the case at all."
Van Cleave said the group is looking at all options to respond, including potential legal action for Couric's deception.
"We are looking at our options," Van Cleave said. "Luckily I have a battery of attorneys...most of them volunteering their time because they believe in gun rights."
Van Cleave, who said the group has a policy of speaking to all press because it's a major way to get their message to the public, added Couric's deception is not the first time a reporter has tried to smear the group--only to have an unedited recording expose the truth.
"We had a case where a reporter totally twisted my words," Van Cleave said. "A paper called The Virginian Pilot. [The reporter] made it sound like I was anti-police. She really twisted my words badly."
"Unfortunately for her, I had the audio and posted it to our website and let our members listen to the audio and then read her article," Van Cleave continued. "People were furious. The Virginian Pilot didn't answer the phones for a week. They never apologized; they just went away for a week. That was the last time I saw [the reporter] doing any stories for them."
Couric continues to avoid the questions about her deceptive actions.
