David Kessler kicked me out of a class on grief because he felt my grief didn’t meet his definition. He did it live, in front of the entire class. He shamed and humiliated me in a way that way completely unnecessary and even cruel. His perspective was that because “no one died” that my grief didn’t rate. I was a whistleblower who lost my entire community, my home, my job, my vocation—everything that shaped my life. My world fell apart because I spoke truth to power. However, as devastating as this was, Mr. Kessler felt my grief didn’t meet not rise to the level where he was willing to offer his expertise to me. To tell me to leave the class when I had just revealed my deepest pain was beyond cruel. He easily could have said “I am so sorry, you have experienced so many losses. I would like to offer some private thoughts—could you stay after the session so we could talk?” He didn’t treat me with dignity or respect. He re-traumatized me, live, in front of the entire seminar, by insisting that I leave immediately. Is this the correct way to treat someone in the depths of grief? Grief affects many people, not just those who have lost a loved one in death. Shame on you, Mr. Kessler, for compounding my suffering.
