God selected David as the King of Israel. Samuel anointed him with oil, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David (I Sam. 16:1-7; 11-13). God chooses, sets apart, and authorizes His anointed ones for a specific holy purpose.

For believers in the New Testament, being anointed shifts from a physical liquid to being filled, equipped, and guided by the Holy Spirit to live out God's calling. God is still calling His people to be holy and set apart for His service (I Pet. 1:15-16)
