Vikram Bhatt's Ghulam casts Aamir Khan as Siddhu, a Mumbai boxer whose brother keeps the books for Sharat Saxena's neighborhood boss Ronnie, and who gets talked into taking a fall. It's drawn from On the Waterfront, which neither host would have guessed. Aamir and Rani Mukerji play off each other beautifully, and the film keeps sending her offscreen. At two hours and forty-two minutes, can a film this unfocused make its brother story land, and is Aamir simply too nice for a gray-area tough guy?
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Heather Drain (Noise Junkies) talk Aati Kya Khandala and the musical numbers that rescue the long stretches, Deepak Tijori's Charlie and the biker gang, a brother's death that can't hit because the film never built him, who in 1970s Hollywood might have played Siddhu, a Midsummer Night's Dream starring Aamir as Puck, and how this one made Thugs of Hindostan look better.
