Génesis 32: Dios transforma tu identidad.

Génesis 32:9-28:
9 Luego dijo Jacob: —Dios de mi padre Abraham, Dios de mi padre Isaac, oh SEÑOR, que me dijiste: “Vuelve a tu tierra y a tu parentela, y yo te prosperaré”, 10 yo no soy digno de todas las misericordias y de toda la fidelidad con que has actuado para con tu siervo. Con solo mi cayado pasé este Jordán, y ahora tengo dos campamentos. 11 Líbrame, por favor, de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo. No sea que venga y me mate y también a la madre junto con los hijos. 12 Tú has dicho: “Yo te prosperaré y haré que tu descendencia sea como la arena del mar, que por ser tan numerosa no se puede contar”.
13 Jacob pasó allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que tenía a mano un presente para su hermano Esaú: 14 Doscientas cabras y veinte machos cabríos, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros, 15 treinta camellas que estaban dando de mamar y sus crías, cuarenta vacas y diez toros, veinte asnas y diez borriquillos. 16 Entregó cada rebaño a sus siervos por separado, y les dijo: —Vayan delante de mí guardando cierta distancia entre rebaño y rebaño.
17 Mandó al primero diciendo: —Cuando Esaú mi hermano te encuentre y te pregunte diciendo: “¿De quién eres tú? ¿Y adónde vas? ¿De quién es eso que llevas delante de ti?”, 18 le dirás: “De tu siervo Jacob; es un presente que envía a mi señor Esaú. Y he aquí que él también viene detrás de nosotros”.
19 Mandó también al segundo, al tercero, y a todos los que iban detrás de los rebaños, diciendo: —Así hablarán a Esaú cuando lo encuentren. 20 También le dirán: “He aquí que tu siervo Jacob viene detrás de nosotros”.
Pues pensó: “Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, para que después pueda yo verlo; quizás él me acepte”.
21 Jacob hizo pasar el presente delante de sí, y él se quedó a pasar aquella noche en el campamento. 22 Pero levantándose aquella noche, tomó a sus dos mujeres, a sus dos siervas y a sus once hijos, y pasó el vado del Jaboc. 23 Los tomó y los hizo cruzar el río junto con todo lo que tenía.
24 Jacob se quedó solo, y un hombre luchó con él hasta que rayaba el alba. 25 Como vio que no podía con Jacob, le tocó en el encaje de la cadera, y el encaje de la cadera se le dislocó mientras luchaba con él. 26 Entonces el hombre le dijo: —¡Déjame ir, porque ya raya el alba!
Y le respondió: —No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
27 Él le dijo: —¿Cuál es tu nombre?
Y él respondió: —Jacob.
28 Él le dijo: —No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel; porque has contendido con Dios y con los hombres, y has prevalecido.

Dios cambió el nombre de Abram (Padre) a Abraham (Padre de multitudes). Este nombre era como una afrenta para alguien que se llamaba padre pero no tenía ni un solo hijo.
El de Sarai (Princesa mía) a Sara (Princesa), denotando que no sería solo la de Abraham sino que ahora lo sería de una nación.
Esto nos muestra la forma tan significativa que Dios usaba en la antigüedad para mostrar que él estaba cambiando la historia de una persona. Les daba una nueva identidad para que comenzaran a vivir bajo la voluntad de Dios, quien estaba cambiando el destino de la persona, bendiciéndola y prosperándola, quitando su afrenta, su vergüenza, dándole un nuevo nombre.

Dios pasó a Jacob por el mismo proceso. Jacob había sido llamado "usurpador" por haber nacido pegado al talón de su hermano, indicando que él siempre quería ser el primero.
Jacob persuadió a su hermano a que le vendiera sus derechos de primogénito y engañó a su padre para que lo bendijera y así reclamar lo que había conseguido de su hermano. Cuando vivía con Labán, buscó la forma de quedarse con el mejor ganado y dejarle el más débil a su suegro.
En este capítulo Jacob se encontró con otra situación, tenía que enfrentar su pasado, a su hermano.
Cuando él escucha que Esaú venía con 400 hombres a encontrarlo, tuvo miedo e intentó enviarle regalos para apaciguar su ira, pero Jacob se dio cuenta que también Dios estaba en ese lugar y elevó una oración sincera de entrega y total dependencia en el Señor. Jacob esta vez no puede depender más de su astucia y sagacidad, sabía que tenía que confiar en el Señor.
Aquí es donde Dios ve el cambio de actitud en Jacob, su vulnerabilidad, la aceptación de su condición, y Dios escucha su clamor.
Dios cambió su nombre, su reputación, su destino. Mañana veremos el desarrollo de este encuentro con su hermano.

Espero que esta lección nos muestre la forma en que Dios obra en nosotros. Nos deja que nos agotemos, que entendamos que no es con nuestras propias fuerzas que vamos a alcanzar la bendición plena. Y que Dios está dispuesto a cambiar nuestra vida, dándonos una nueva identidad en Dios, cambiando nuestro nombre y abriéndonos caminos hacia un porvenir lleno de la protección y la bendición de Dios.

Genesis 32: God transforms your identity.

Genesis 32:9-28 NKJV:
Then Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, the Lord who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your family, and I will deal well with you’: I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies and of all the truth which You have shown Your servant; for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies. Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and attack me and the mother with the children. For You said, ‘I will surely treat you well, and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.’ ” So he lodged there that same night, and took what came to his hand as a present for Esau his brother: two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals. Then he delivered them to the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between successive droves.” And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Esau my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? Whose are these in front of you?’ then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my Lord Esau; and behold, he also is behind us.’ ” So he commanded the second, the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “In this manner you shall speak to Esau when you find him; and also say, ‘Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.’ ” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” So the present went on over before him, but he himself lodged that night in the camp. And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of Jabbok. He took them, sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had. Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”


God changed the name of Abram (Father) to Abraham (Father of multitudes). This name was like an affront to someone who was called father but did not have a single son.
The one from Sarai (My princess) to Sarah (Princess), denoting that it would not only be Abraham's but now it would be that of a nation.
This shows us the very significant way that God used in ancient times to show that He was changing the history of a person. He gave them a new identity so that they would begin to live under the will of God, who was changing the destiny of the person, blessing and prospering them, removing their affront, their shame, giving them a new name.

God put Jacob through the same process. Jacob had been called a "usurper" for being born right on the heels of his brother, indicating that he always wanted to be first.
Jacob persuaded his brother to sell him her firstborn rights and tricked his father into blessing him so he could claim what he had gotten from his brother. When he lived with Laban, he found a way to keep the best cattle and leave the weakest to his father-in-law.
In this chapter Jacob found himself with another situation, he had to face his past, his brother.
When he heard that Esau was coming with 400 men to meet him, he was afraid and tried to send him gifts to appease his anger, but Jacob realized that God was also in that place and raised a sincere prayer of surrender and total dependence on the Lord. Jacob this time can no longer depend on his astuce and sagacity, he knew that he had to trust in the Lord.
This is where God sees Jacob's change of heart, his vulnerability, his acceptance of his condition, and God hears his cry.
God changed his name, his reputation, his destiny. Tomorrow we will see the development of this meeting with his brother.

I hope this lesson will show us how God works in us. He allows us to exhaust ourselves, to understand that it is not with our own strength that we are going to achieve full blessing. And that God is willing to change our lives, giving us a new identity in God, changing our name and opening paths for us towards a future full of God's protection and blessing.
