Good episode on one of the most interesting naval engagements of the war. But I think you left out a key detail about the battleship engagement. South Dakota got so beat up because she lost power, not from enemy action but from an electrical fault. To make matters worse, she was illuminated by the burning US destroyers, drawing fire with no way to fight back. By the time she regained power she had taken the 26 hits you described and had to withdraw. Her misfortune however worked to Washington's benefit because SD drew fire from Washington
