Hosts, Cortland Jones and Shauna Felton King, welcome Dr. Mark E. King.

Dr. Mark King has over 20 years of experience in public education serving as a middle and high school principal in Prince George's County, Maryland for several years before joining DCPS in 2010. In his position as Instructional Superintendent, he supervised the public middle schools across Washington, DC, for 5 years. During his tenure, the middle schools outpaced every other urban district in NAEP scores and in TUDA scores. In 2015, he was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief of Operations and Programs. He led the overall operations of the system, which included security, food services, facilities, and after school programs. He has served as an adjunct professor at Bowie State University, teaching graduate and doctoral classes.

He is adept in administrative collaboration, data analysis, RFP development, implementation of after school programs, administrator mentoring, school culture and climate, and school improvement. As an instructional superintendent, he led schools to implement a data utilization protocol which resulted in significant academic gains. He has presented across the country at several conferences including the Council of Great City Schools.

As a high school principal at a school with over 2800 children, he used data analysis to lead a school to make Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) for consecutive years, and as a middle school principal, he led his school to become the first middle school in his county’s history to have his school removed from the state’s reconstitution list.

He has a solid educational foundation and passion for student success. He is also extremely focused on removing barriers, the achievement gap, and creating pathways for all students to receive an excellent educational foundation. He currently serves as the Instructional Leadership Executive Director in Baltimore City Public Schools for 4 Pre-K-8 schools, 5 Pre-K-5 schools, 1 Pre-K-2 school, and 1, 3rd-8th grade campus.
