Dr. Scheuer, going back to the Soviet Afghan War and the derivative mujahideen soldiers of that time period, is it appropriate to say that todays Al Qaeda and Taliban (the new Afghan government) are remnants of those mujahideen soldiers? Am I overstating the importance of our support through Operation Cyclone, both directly and indirectly, of these mujahideen soliders and guerilla groups..such as Jalaluddin Haqqani (a Bin Laden mentor and father of the current Taliban interior secretary), Mohammad Omar (founder of the Taliban), MAK (partially funded by Bin Laden as his primary recruiting organization) and others? In other words, had we contributed ZERO (the ultimate hypothetical) to aid the mujahideen.......could these groups have survived a much more lethal invasion by the Soviets in our hypothetical absence? Had Bin Laden, Haqqani, and Omar been killed.......would the course of history been changed? Thank you!
