When Charlene Flynn was only 4 she tried to awaken her 12-year-old brother, Patrick. Much to her shock, she discovered he was deceased. Her mother was later convicted. Charlene's life went into a tailspin. She was placed in different foster care homes, group homes, and psychiatric hospitals prior to living with relatives. But Charlene was determined to overcome her past and live up to her potential. Listen as this remarkable young woman (now a mother herself) explains how she did just that.

Charlene did not find Patrick. I am the one that found him - I went into shock - all I wanted is to find out what happened to my son and still do. I was held in a 3 by 5 cell with no toilet or drinking water (only a matress on the floor). The dectives convinced me, because I have history of bein abused, that I did it & did not remember. I made statements according to what they told me. I did not eat or sleep for 5 days during the time I made the statements. I do not recall seeing cuts - Just his face with some red puff stuff coming out of his nose. 32 years later - I do recall when I 1st came in his room he was on his stomach with his face toward the wall. For 32 years all I remember about finding him was the red puff stuff from this nose.. I screamed & called 911

This was a message that I sent to Charlene on 9/14/19 I know about the book & I know you think I killed my son. Please consider that the statements I made are not corroborated by the corpus delicti (I know you have a copy). The statements say that Patrick grabbed my hair & I stepped on him. My hair was not found in Patrick's hand, nor were there any internal injuries (which would happen if he was stepped on). Also the statements say that I cut him. Dr. Garcia estimated that Patrick "struggled with his attacker for 5 to 10 min before losing consciousness". She had a unique way to explain why the body was not bloody. She said that "the numerous cuts were all superficial, like paper cuts". In her expert opinion the various cuts were inflicted at or very near to the time of death. Common sense will tell you that even paper cuts bleed & if you were being attacked you would not just lay there & let someone barely cut you. It is quite obvious that the police told me about the cuts & knife, & used unfair tactics to produce a false confession. Also consider that Pamela Williams, the states expert in forensic biology & serology, did not receive the samples until 5 days after the crime. She stated that "if the samples were not properly stored it would affect the testing. She got a weak positive for acid phosphate. Patrick's dilated anal orifice was never explained & why was acid phosphate even found in the anal swab. Ms. Williams testified that acid phophate is found in saliva, sweat, urine, vaginal secetions & seminal fluid. She did not begin to analyze the samples until August 22, 1991. Her report was issued on December 2, 1991. Charlie Durel, a finger print expert, testified that he was contacted by Lt. Steve Buras, in the early morning hours, on July 14, 1991. He relinquished control of the knife & shoes to Dr. West (a dentist) at the morgue (who knows what really happened during the 3 1/2 hours they spent at the morgue). There was type 'B' found at the crime scene (I am 'O' neg). God told me about your book. He did not let me know if it is just a thought, or you just started writing, or you have finished. All I got was an insight about a book. I did not get to sleep until 2 am & was woken up this morning just before 4 am. When I was being interrogated, I was in shock & did not eat or sleep for 5 days. I would barely pass out & the shock woke up 10 min later. I was held in a small room without a toilet or drinking water. I could see the guard station with the clock. When I woke up this morning, I woke up in shock & started to cry. God told me it was His way of confirming about the book, He told me to write you this letter. I want you to understand that I do love you. It is your choice not to see me & to believe what you will. I honor your choice, Have a great & wonderful day. From your mother, Patricia Van Winkle
