Who is Jesus?
A great teacher? A prophet? A miracle worker? The founder of Christianity? Or something much more?
In Matthew 16, Jesus takes His disciples away from the crowds and asks them two questions. First: “Who do men say that I am?” Then He turns the question directly toward them: “
But who do you say that I am?”
In this episode of Everyday Grace, Belinda Kirk explores the setting of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus' use of questions as a teaching tool, the significance of His title “Son of Man,” and the different explanations people were already offering for His identity.
Then Peter answers: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
But Belinda doesn't leave Peter's confession two thousand years in the past. She brings Jesus' question into everyday struggles with grief, uncertainty, heartbreak, and fear. If Jesus truly is the Christ, His identity changes how we face everything else.
And for someone who doesn't yet know Christ, the question becomes even more important.
You can know what your parents believe. You can know what your church teaches. You can know what culture says about Jesus. But eventually, Jesus' question becomes personal:
Who do YOU say that I am?
