We are proud of our permissive society which champions multiculturalism yet why is there so much social unrest and why are leaders with beards less likely to be elected to power? Why does time of day or how good you look aftect the decision of a jury? The problem is not much the mechanism of society but how a brand of managing society is applied. Without strong leadership which means firm application of unity and boundaries to the people then we lapse into unrest where power to the people is just power to the rabble and where Marxism becomes sloppily applied democracy. Aristotle said democracy will only work where you can be heard shouting from end of the city to the other. Permissive parents lead to restless children and a permissive leadership will lead to a restless society.
