These commissions are semi-government entities that are often chaired by private individuals who arbitrarily determine whether a change you are making to your house conforms with the “historic attributes” of that neighborhood. Historic district commissions are problematic for a number of reasons such as being vague and permitting disgruntled neighbors to use unclear laws to harass those living around them.
