CorpusCast is the podcast about corpus linguistics and what it can do for society. Join Dr Robbie Love as he speaks with top researchers in the field to find out more about how corpus linguistics – the study of linguistic patterns in large samples of language – is applied to a diverse range of areas including health, social justice and education.
On this episode, Dr Love talks to Dr Dawn Knight (reader in applied linguistics in the School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University) and Dr Anne O’Keeffe (senior lecturer in applied linguistics in the Department of English Language and Literature at Mary Immaculate College) about the contribution of corpus linguistics to research in online interaction.
Dawn is an applied linguist whose research interests lie in the areas of corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, and multimodality.
Anne is an applied linguist who specialises in the use of corpus linguistics to explore areas such as pragmatics, discourse analysis, learner grammar and media discourse.
The Interactional Variation Online (IVO) project aims to gain an in-depth insight into the potential barriers to effective communication in virtual workplace environments. For more information, visit the project website: https://ivohub.com/
The IVO project brings together a large team of researchers from Cardiff University, Mary Immaculate College, the University of Nottingham, University College Dublin, the University of Aberdeen, the University of Limerick and Swansea University. The IVO project has formed a researcher network with monthly get-togethers.
This network brings together postgraduates and researchers interested in sharing insights into applications of corpus linguistics, corpus compilation and methods, multimodal corpus analysis, institutional and professional discourse and virtual meetings.
Dawn was principal investigator of CorCenCC (Corpws Cenedlaethol Cymraeg Cyfoes) – the National Corpus of Contemporary Welsh. CorCenCC is a language resource for Welsh speakers, Welsh learners, Welsh language researchers, and anyone who is interested in the Welsh language. CorCenCC is a freely accessible collection of multiple language samples, gathered from real-life communication.
Anne is director of the Inter-Varietal Applied Corpus Studies (IVACS) research network, connecting corpus researchers and PhD students internationally. IVACS hosts a biennial international conference at one of their partner institutions around the world.
