Colleen Stan claims she was an experienced hitchhiker, she actually denied two rides to go past before accepting the ride with Hooker. Her reason for accepting the ride was because she felt “Confident climbing into the blue van since his wife (Janice) and the baby were in the car”

They stopped at a gas station along the way, Colleen went to use the restroom. When she reflects back to that moment, she remembers this gut feeling or "A voice telling her to run and jump out a window and never look back," but instead calmed her fears and went back to the car.

Once they were in an isolated area, Hooker pulled off the highway then held Colleen at knifepoint, then gagged, blindfolded, handcuffed, and forced her into what is known as a “head box,” which was designed to prevent light, sound, and fresh air from entering. Once she was locked into the head box he got back on the road, headed to his home in Tehama County, Red Bluff, California.
