In this episode, we trace the story of the guillotine from its Enlightenment origins to its bloody role during the Reign of Terror, and its long, awkward afterlife as France’s official method of execution well into the 20th century. From public spectacles and political purges to its final use in 1977, the guillotine left a mark that went far beyond the scaffold. Today it lives on in films, songs, and nightmares as a reminder of how a machine built for justice became an icon of fear.
