A former Louisiana State Senator has left the Democratic Party and now running for Congress… as a Republican. USA’s Russ Jones has the story.

"It's lonely sometimes."

That’s Elbert Guillory describing what it's like to run as a black Republican as he seeks election to Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District.

"The values just weren't there," said Guillory. "I'm pro gun, pro God, pro country and pro-life."

As a Navy veteran, Guillory sensed a calling to run for Congress.

"Government spending - I must address that," added Guillory. "Education and of course safety. We must become more safe in our homes, our shopping centers, churches and nightclubs. We've got to become safe."

Republican Rep. John Fleming will vacate the seat as he seeks to replace retiring U.S. Senator David Vitter.
