Also the author of "Secondary Break: An NBA Dad's Story," Marvin Sr. talks about what it meant to him to be able to write a book about a dad raising a son to make it to the highest level of basketball, in the world! There were a lot of things that went into writing the book, and Marvin Sr. talks about it!
The conversation leads to how he went about leading Marvin Jr. to become a determined and hard-working basketball player, and what steps were taken to make sure that Jr. was ready for the adventure, and what trials Sr. had to prepare Jr. for, along the way!
Allowing Jr. to be coached and not trying to coach the coach into how to handle Jr. was a major topic, and his response IS refreshing to hear! How did Jr. decide on North Carolina for college?!
Sr. talks about how he handled being a dad of a high profile athlete and then talks about how someone, like Lavar Ball, probably didn't handle to spotlight very well, and how it might have had an adverse effect!
Marvin Jr. was drafted #2, after winning a championship at North Carolina, to the Atlanta Hawks. Sam asks if Sr. has an issue with how then-Hawks, and current Indiana University, head coach handled the development of his son, even though he "couldn't" say anything because it was Jr's fight to have!
