Frederick Valentich was an Australian aviator who vanished during a 125-nautical-mile training flight in a Cessna 182L light aircraft, registered as VH-DSJ, over Bass Strait. On the evening of Saturday, October 21, 1978, the twenty-year-old Valentich communicated with Melbourne air traffic control, stating that he was being shadowed by an aircraft flying approximately 1,000 feet above him and that his engine had started to malfunction.
