In his final days, while afflicted with terminal lung cancer, Garry Artman, a prisoner in a hospital in Jackson, made a startling confession to detectives, according to sources. Struggling with his illness, Artman disclosed his involvement in a series of previously unresolved crimes. He admitted to the 1996 murder of Sharon Hammack in Grand Rapids, a crime for which he had been convicted, as well as the murder of 24-year-old Dusty Shuck, whose body was discovered in Maryland. Furthermore, Artman claimed responsibility for nine additional murders in Grand Rapids, cases that had remained unsolved and for which he had not been charged.
“She was an amazing soul. She was good inside and out,” Shuck’s mother Lori Kreutzer said.
Dusty Shuck's life tragically ended near a Maryland truck stop off I-70 on May 4, 2006, where she was discovered brutally beaten and stabbed. DNA evidence implicated Garry Artman, a long-haul truck driver, in this heinous crime. However, Artman's diagnosis with terminal cancer raised doubts about the feasibility of conducting a trial.
According to Kreutzer, who spoke with news outlets, Artman's health had deteriorated significantly, leading to a coma and dependence on a respirator, with expectations of his passing in mid-December. Remarkably, Artman defied these expectations. After being removed from the respirator, he regained consciousness from his coma and confessed to the murder of Dusty Shuck. Kreutzer referred to this unexpected turn of events as "a miracle" and "divine intervention," emphasizing that, at the very least, Artman's confession brought some closure to this tragic case.
