Nitesh Tiwari's Dangal tells the true story of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler who trains his daughters Geeta and Babita to compete at the Commonwealth Games. Aamir Khan bulked up and then put on a dad bod for the role, and the bulked-up version is on screen for maybe five minutes. The wrestling scenes are shot well enough that the outcome feels in doubt even when history says otherwise. Can a film this good for two-thirds of its running time survive a last ten minutes that feel like a lesser movie took over?
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Heather Drain (Noise Junkies) talk the psychology of amateur wrestling, the Nigerian opponent who made a gold medal look out of reach, Fatima Sana Shaikh's uncanny resemblance to the real Geeta, a climactic payoff for a scene the film never showed, the national coach written as a cartoon villain, and why Aamir Khan stands apart from Hollywood's interchangeable leading men.
