U.S. Swimmer Dana Vollmer owns seven Olympic medals (4 Gold,including one from 2016) and six world records but the challengers haven’t always been in the pool. At age 15, Dana was diagnosed with long QT syndrome, a cardiac electrical disorder, and much like the defibrillator doctors recommended be poolside in case of a cardiac emergency, the threat of heart disease was never far from Vollmer’s mind. In 2012, she was cleared of the heart condition that might have ended her dreams if not for her strength, determination, and unsinkable support system.

February is American Heart Month and here’s the sobering truth: One woman dies in the U.S. every 80 seconds from cardiovascular diseases, including stroke. And 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke. But, there is good news. 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented with education and action – that action is better understanding the key numbers that may indicate risk. They are:

Total cholesterol
Blood pressure
Blood sugar
Body mass index (BMI)

This month, Vollmer has teamed up with CVS Health to help arm women with lifesaving information about their own hearts. The nation’s largest pharmacy company, a proud national sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women movement, is offering free heart screenings with healthcare professionals in its more than 1,100 MinuteClinics® on Valentine’s Day.
