If you thought American millennials were bad... Wait until you meet China's tangping’ers - the unmotivated Chinese bachelors leading to China's population decline.

It's hard to believe that a country with 1.4 billion people is having a population growth problem, but in 2021, China recorded its lowest birth rate in history: just 10.6 million babies. And the blame rests squarely at the foot of the Chinese Communist Party [CCP].

Back up: Between 1980 and 2015, the CCP had a "one-child policy" which is exactly what it sounds like. It restricted each household to just one child. [We won't get into the millions of forced abortions and child confiscation for those who broke this rule]

As a result of this policy, Chinese families often preferred to have a son. [You can guess what happened if they had a daughter.] The result was a population with millions more bachelors than bachelorettes.

Enter the tangping’ers: Many Chinese men in their twenties and early thirties have basically given up on life. Unlike their parents and grandparents, who worked hard in order to own their own home and build a family, the new generation of coddled only-child sons has trouble finding the motivation to even get out of bed in the morning. This is where the name "tangping'ers" comes from. It literally means: “lay flat”

For the tangping'ers marriage and children are just too much work. And even if they did want to start a family, the "one-child policy" has created 30 million more men than women. So the competition is fierce.

Making matters worse, many Chinese women don't want them anyway. They're more interested in building their careers and burdened by the responsibility of taking care of their aging parents.

All of this has led to Chinese women averaging only 1.3 children. For reference:
🇺🇸 the U.S. averages a 1.7
🌎 the world average is 2.4

Sadly, the tangping'ers are doing more to stop China's quest for world domination than our own American leaders.
