Rajkumar Santoshi's China Gate is Seven Samurai with ten disgraced soldiers. Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Amrish Puri, Danny Denzongpa, and company take on Mukesh Tiwari's bandit Jageera, and the film tips its hat to Kurosawa up front. It runs two hours and forty-seven minutes with almost no musical numbers, and the one big one, Urmila Matondkar's Chamma Chamma, has outlived the film. Can ensemble chemistry carry a story less interesting than the actors telling it?
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Mike White (The Projection Booth) talk how all ten men get distinct personas where The Hobbit's dwarves blur together, the young outsider who earns his place, the little girl and her shiftless uncle, Sholay's Viju Khote among the soldiers, Indian cinema's matter-of-fact gore, Chamma Chamma's second life in Moulin Rouge, and why a film this good is nearly impossible to find with synced English subtitles.
