Few bands in metal are as unrelenting and uncompromising as Carcass.
For over 30 years the band have been decimating minds, souls and eardrums with their ferocious brand of death metal, carving their names forever more into the annals of heavy metal music.
After a prolongued absence, Carcass released their first single in over five years, Under The Scalpel Blade, in 2019 which led to a four track EP titled Despicable the following year but fans were still left lamenting the absence of a full length album to transport them to the bowels of hell since Surgical Steel in 2013.
With the impending release of Carcass’ first full length album in eight years, Torn Arteries, looming large drummer Daniel Wilding joined HEAVY to talk about the new album and its musical mysteries within.
"Yeah thanks man. It’s been a little while hasn't it,” he laughed before turning his attention to Torn Arteries which will be released on September 17. "Surgical Steel eight years ago was kind of a statement for Bill and Geoff. They wanted to show people that the band wasn’t dead and come back hard and fast and heavy and extreme as they could go really. I think with Torn Arteries Bill’s idea of it was if we're gonna do another album we'd better do something that we've never done before. We don't wanna retread old ground. We don't wanna do another Surgical Steel. The thought process behind it was... there's always gonna be thrashing beats and there’s always gonna be blast beats, because that's Carcass, but to try and fit in as much stuff that hasn't been done before as a band as possible. That was the initial idea for the album and what ended up being the bit that was the hardest to pull off; to try and do stuff that was different but still sounds like Carcass. There’s a lot of unique stuff on there that I don’t think a lot of people have heard from the band before. I'm unbelievably proud of it. It’s crazy to think people are finally hearing it after... we've been sat on it for over two years (laughs)."
In the full interview Daniel talks more about the songs on Torn Arteries, how they sound new while still maintaining the carcass stamp, connecting musically with their first album Reek Of Putrefaction, the singles released and how they represent the rest of the album, not being able to road test new music before recording it, the lyrical treasure map for fans in the album sleeve and more.
