A child bride in 1880s Bengal grows up in a mansion of brothers, and years later the village blames the killings in the woods on a witch. Anvita Dutt's Bulbbul, a Netflix original, stars Tripti Dimri, Avinash Tiwary, Paoli Dam and Rahul Bose in a double role, and it plays its gothic horror like a painted fairy tale. It was Andrew's first Indian film and, at 94 minutes, a rare one under two hours. Some critics called it all style and no substance; this episode makes the case against that.
The Bollywood Cinema Club's Chris Stachiw, the Doctor of Podcasting, and Andrew DeLeon (recording artist and horror fan) talk a look that is at once modern and rooted in Bengal, Rahul Bose's brothers as a Jekyll-and-Hyde pair, the red feet that bookend Bulbbul's rebirth, Satya's arc and the letter he leaves behind, a punishment worse than death for the man responsible, and why the English dub drifts so far from the subtitles.
