In this episode we continue studying the Book of Genesis. In this episode Isaac believes he is about to die, so he asks Esau to prepare his favorite meal and bring it to him so he can eat it and bless him. But Rebekah intervenes and convinces Jacob to pose as Esau so he can get the blessing instead.

Jacob resisted her at first, he didn’t believe they could pull it off. Esau was a hairy man and he was not, there was no way Isaac would fall for it. But she was confident he would. And if he didn’t she would take full responsibility for it. So he complied and the plan was set in motion.

Their plan worked and Jacob obtained the blessing. Esau cried and pleaded for a blessing. He said, Jacob had stolen his birthright and now his blessing. But he failed to mention he had traded the birthright for a bowl of lentil stew.

This reveals that sometimes we make decisions that crying and weeping cannot change.

So Paul tell us in Ephesians chapter 5 verses 15 and 18 to walk circumspectly.

Strong’s says circumspectly means, accurately, diligently, strictly, precisely, and distinctly.

Here's the text:

Ephesians 5:15  See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

Ephesians 5:16  Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

Ephesians5:17  Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

Ephesians 5:18  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.

The writer of Hebrews mentions Esau's reaction to what happened, in Hebrews chapter 12 verses 14 through 17.

Here's the text:

Hebrews 12: 14  Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Hebrews 12:15  Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

Hebrews 12:16  Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

Hebrews 12:17  For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

We need to understand what the will of God is for our lives, this will help us avoid making decisions we regret because sometimes decisions or mistakes we make have long term consequences or even eternal consequences.

This refers to decisions in this life of course, but it also refers to the one decision we must all make, and that is the decision to receive Christ as our Lord and Savior.

If we fail to make the decision to follow Christ, our eternal inheritance is at stake and once we stand before the judgment seat of Christ, no amount of weeping and wailing will make a difference, we will receive our reward, some will receive eternal life and some eternal condemnation.

We also note the power of a fathers words. Isaac said, Jacob would surely be blessed due to the words he had spoken over him.

Keil and Delitzsch says, "the blessing was not a matter of subjective human affection, but a right entrusted by the grace of God to paternal supremacy and authority."

The word father means, a ruler, chief, head or founder of a household, group, family, clan, a producer, generator, a term of respect and honor.

So this power to bless comes from the authority of being a father. A privilege God gives to men who are founders of people they create and bring into this world.

Perhaps this is referred to in Proverbs chapter 17 verse 8.

Children’s children are the crown of old men and the glory of children are their fathers.

If children are abandoned by their fathers, does that mean that have no glory?

As beings made in the image of God men have been given the divine privilege and responsibility to bless their children.

Perhaps some not only sell their birthright and blessing but they also sell their children's birthrights and blessings.

If they don't repent there will be lots of weeping and wailing on judgment day.
