During the early 20th century, Tulsa was recognized nationally for its African American community known as the Greenwood District. It was home to a thriving business district and surrounding residential area that earned it the nickname “Black Wall Street.” In June 1921, a series of events caused a mob of white residents, some deputized and given weapons by city police, attacked Black residents and completely destroyed homes and businesses of the Greenwood District.
