The Lone Ranger #944, "Black Caballero Part 1,"
A mysterious outlaw calling himself the Black Caballero terrorizes the border country, striking with lightning speed and vanishing like magic after each robbery. Wearing a black mask and cape and riding a midnight stallion called El Diablo, this theatrical bandit lives for excitement and danger rather than gold, distributing his stolen loot to his gang while seeking ever greater thrills. When his henchman Hawk mentions the Lone Ranger, the Black Caballero realizes he has finally found a worthy opponent who can provide the challenge he craves.
The Lone Ranger, disguised as a stranger, visits White Springs to investigate the outlaw's activities. While talking with Sheriff Blaze, his deputy, and local citizens like Matt, he learns about the Black Caballero's bold robberies and seemingly unstoppable horse. The townspeople argue about whether the Lone Ranger or the Black Caballero is superior, debating whose horse would win in a race. The evening takes a dramatic turn when the Black Caballero himself rides brazenly into town and nails a message to the sheriff's door before disappearing into the night.
