The public became invested in the case, with social media campaigns and appeals for information.On September 19, 2021, human remains were discovered in a remote area of the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming, consistent with the description of Gabby Petito. Later, the Teton County Coroner's Office officially confirmed the remains belonged to Gabby, ruling her death a homicide. The cause of death was determined to be strangulation.Gabby's fiancé, Brian Laundrie, returned to Florida on September 1 without Gabby. He became a person of interest in the case but disappeared shortly after Gabby was reported missing.

A massive search was launched for Brian, but he remained elusive, leading to speculation and intense media scrutiny.
