Assistendo ad una messa cattolica dopo molti anni, due sono le cose che mi hanno colpito, e mi hanno fatto riflettere.

Oggi per la prima volta dopo tanti anni ho nuovamente assistito ad una messa in una chiesa cattolica. Quando ero bambina andavo sempre in chiesa e di quel periodo mi è rimasto il sapere a memoria la liturgia, quindi tutte le parti recitate dal prete, oggi mi sono accorta che le so ancora tutte, e tutte le preghiere, ma anche tutti gli scambi che ci sono ci sono. Ci sono due cose che mi hanno colpito moltissimo appunto perché era da tanto tempo che non assistevo più a una messa e poi quando andavo in chiesa, da bambina, ero una fervente cattolica, ora non lo sono più quindi guardo le cose un po' dal di fuori. La prima cosa che mi ha colpito è quante volte durante i vari passaggi della messa il prete ha pronunciato la parola Israele: c'è il popolo di Israele, e c'è la città di Israele, e c'è la guerra, e c'è il popolo che combatte. Tantissimi riferimenti a Israele, la cosa mi ha veramente colpito, perché non me lo ricordavo, e mi ha fatto pensare: una persona che non si interessa di politica internazionale, che quindi non ha alcuna opinione sui fatti che succedono in Israele, soprattutto in Palestina, una persona che non segue la politica, che però va in chiesa tutte le domeniche, si ritrova a sua insaputa ad avere un'opinione positiva di Israele, semplicemente perché il prete ogni domenica ripete Israele qua, Israele là. Immagino che questa persona, che non si occupa di politica quindi non sa assolutamente cosa sta succedendo in quella parte del mondo, quando poi sui giornali legge, oppure alla televisione sente 'Israele' naturalmente starà dalla parte di Israele, perché? Perchè è la parte della chiesa, è la parte della religione cattolica. La seconda cosa che mi ha colpito è che a un certo punto della funzione il prete ha preso il turibolo pieno di incenso e si è messo, è andato in giro a fars spenzolare il triplo per far uscire appunto l'odore dell'incenso. In quel momento aveva il suo vestito con tutte i paramenti, quindi era vestito per l'occasione, come tutti i preti che celebrano la messa, ma quello che mi ha colpito è che sembrava uno sciamano, mi ha ricordato le immagini di tutti gli sciamani che ho visto in vita mia, sia degli indiani americani, ma anche degli aborigeni, delle popolazioni asiatiche, che vanno in giro con un pezzo di legno, un pezzo di carbone o comunque qualcosa da cui esce fumo e lo spennellano in giro per far andar via gli spiriti malvagi. Ecco il prete mi ha ricordato lo sciamano, e poi diciamo che è un po' lo sciamano dei cattolici il prete, no?

Today for the first time in many years I have again attended a mass in a Catholic church. When I was a child I always went to church and from that period I still knew the liturgy by heart, so all the parts were recited by the priest, today I realized that I still remember all the prayers, but also all the exchanges during the mass. There are two things that struck me a lot, precisely because it was a long time since I had attended mass and then when I went to church, as a child, I was a fervent Catholic, now I am no longer so, so I look at things a little from the outside. The first thing that struck me is how many times during the various passages of the mass the priest pronounced the word Israel: the people of Israel, the city of Israel, the war, and the people fighting. Lots of references to Israel, it really struck me, because I didn't remember it, and it made me think: a person who is not interested in international politics, who therefore has no opinion on the events that happen in Israel, especially in Palestine, a person who does not follow politics, but who goes to church every Sunday, find themselves having a positive opinion of Israel by default, simply because the priest every Sunday repeats Israel here, Israel there. I imagine that this person, who does not deal with politics, therefore does not know absolutely what is happening in that part of the world, when they then read in the newspapers, or hear 'Israel' on television, of course, they will be on Israel's side, why? Because it is part of the church, it is part of the Catholic religion. The second thing that struck me is that at a certain point during the service the priest took the censer full of incense and went around waving it to let out the smell of incense. At that moment he had his dress with all the vestments, so he was dressed for the occasion, like all priests who celebrate mass, but what struck me is that he looked like a shaman, he reminded me of the images of all the shamans that I have seen in my life, both American Indians, but also Aborigines, Asian, walking around with a piece of wood, a piece of coal or anything from which smoke comes out and wave it around to send away wicked spirits. That's it, the priest reminded me of the shaman, and then let's say that the priest is a bit like the shaman of Catholics, right?
