mostra di piùOn June 22, 2022 at approximately 11:41 PM, Deputy Thomas Struck with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office observed a 2019 Jeep driving 68 MPH in a 45 MPH zone southbound on Route 41 North. He began driving towards the car until the driver approached the intersection with Delany Road. As the driver headed towards the intersection, he observed the red light camera photograph a driver, but he did not think it was the Jeep. As he was behind the Jeep, the driver reversed and may have struck his patrol car if he did not reverse as well. After the light turned green, he followed the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop.
He made contact with a 22-year-old female, who was identified as Vanessa Castrejon. As he was speaking with Vanessa, he detected the odor of alcohol. Vanessa was asked to exit the vehicle as he initiated his DUI investigation. Vanessa admitted to consuming 2 drinks earlier that evening and told the Deputy that she was coming from Fatmans, which is a sports bar in Gurnee, Illinois. Based on her admission to consuming alcohol, Deputy Struck asked Vanessa to perform field sobriety exercises.
The first exercise was the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test. The second exercise was the Walk and Turn test. During the Walk and Turn test, Vanessa did not touch heel-to-toe on each step and took an incorrect number of steps. The final exercise was the One Leg Stand test. During the One Leg Stand test, Vanessa failed to raise her foot in the proper fashion and displayed a lack of balance.
Following the field sobriety exercises, Deputy Struck offered Vanessa an opportunity to take a Preliminary Breath Test (PBT), but she refused. Based on her erratic driving, the odor of alcohol, her admission to consuming alcohol, and her inability to adequately perform the field sobriety exercises, Deputy Struck placed Vanessa under arrest for driving under the influence. After she was handcuffed, Vanessa was placed in the patrol car and her vehicle was towed by North Chicago Towing. Deputy Arrowood completed an inventory of the vehicle and found a small amount of open alcohol.
Vanessa was transported to the Lake County Jail for further processing. At the jail, Vanessa agreed to submit breath samples for testing. The results indicated a BAC of 0.124%, which was over the legal limit of 0.08%. After the paperwork was completed, Vanessa was given a ride back to her residence.
Vanessa was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol (625 ILCS 5/11-501(a)(2)), driving under the influence of alcohol BAC over 0.08 (ILCS 5/11-501(a)(1)), unsafe backing on a roadway (625 ILCS 5/11-1402(a)), and driving 21-25 MPH above limit (625 ILCS 5/11-601(b)). Court records indicate that Vanessa’s case was disposed of in court on October 27, 2023, and she was fined a total of $3,258 and ordered to pay a total of $100 in restitution. Vanessa would later be arrested again for DUI in Lake Forest, Illinois on November 28, 2023.
