2 Samuel 24: Giving to God the sacrifice that it costs us.
2 Samuel 24:15-25:
So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel from the morning till the appointed time. From Dan to Beersheba seventy thousand men of the people died. And when the angel stretched out His hand over Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the destruction, and said to the angel who was destroying the people, “It is enough; now restrain your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. Then David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel who was striking the people, and said, “Surely I have sinned, and I have done wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Let Your hand, I pray, be against me and against my father’s house.” And Gad came that day to David and said to him, “Go up, erect an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” So David, according to the word of Gad, went up as the Lord commanded. Now Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming toward him. So Araunah went out and bowed before the king with his face to the ground. Then Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” And David said, “To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be withdrawn from the people.” Now Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever seems good to him. Look, here are oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing implements and the yokes of the oxen for wood. All these, O king, Araunah has given to the king.” And Araunah said to the king, “May the Lord your God accept you.” Then the king said to Araunah, “No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord heeded the prayers for the land, and the plague was withdrawn from Israel.
----------
This is the last chapter of this book. In the books of Chronicles and Kings we will see some similar and new details of David's life that are not here.
Here we see a sad event when God punished the people of Israel for inciting David to commit a recklessness that would turn into tragedy. According to God's law, the people should not be counted but David did it. When the angel sent to bring plague and death began to work, David cried out to God for mercy, and God was sad to see His people suffer. That is why God commanded David to offer a sacrifice at the place where the angel was passing. Thus God would appease His anger by receiving the sacrifice as a pleasing offering.
David knew the heart of God very well and knew how to please Him, that is why he ran to offer his sacrifice. The owner of the threshing floor, Araunah, offered the king all the materials for the sacrifice; David refused that offer because David knew that something of his own, personal and selected, must be given.
David knew that the main ingredient for a pleasing offering to the Lord was the intention with which it was offered, it was a humble attitude and a total surrender that comes from the heart. It is when one recognizes that one must give everything even if it costs, even if it hurts. It is when one makes drastic changes to the character, to the personality. It is when one changes habits that have been hindering our relationship with God for a long time and we don't feel full freedom in God because they have become ties that little by little weaken us, to the point that we settle for that mediocre life. When we give something to God that costs us, we feel that we are starting anew because God's mercy gives us that new opportunity for spiritual restoration. David learned this when he made that grave mistake before God and wrote Psalm 51.
David gave his best to God, with a voluntary heart and with total dedication. And God forgave the people, heard David's prayer, and received his offering of repentance and reconciliation with God.
I hope that we will follow his example and stand in front of the problem that is causing chaos in our home. If we have neglected ourselves spiritually, let us acknowledge our mistakes, intercede for our lives and for our families and once again offer our will, desires, our future, our family, our talents, our lives on the altar. Offer over the fire so that any attitude of arrogance, obstinacy, double mindedness, cowardice can be burned.
This is the time where we must make decisions that, even if they hurt, will make a big difference in our home. Let's start a new stage in dealing with our family, with our partner to do God's will together. Let's start praying together, showing respect and affection for each other, listening more and supporting each other more. The great thing is that we have a merciful God who will allow us to live new stages at home and will give us the wisdom to do so if we make an effort, we are brave and take the initiative to start leaving these things on the altar of God.
