1896: The Dow Jones Industrial Average, a stock market index, was first published by Charles Dow, co-founder of Dow Jones & Company and The Wall Street Journal. It initially included 12 companies, primarily in the industrial sector.


1897: Bram Stoker's iconic Gothic horror novel "Dracula" was published, introducing the world to Count Dracula and establishing many conventions of subsequent vampire fantasy.
