In this episode, Dr. Cassandra Vonnes, a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, and member of the GAPNA Communication Team, talks with nurse leader and the 2020-2021 GAPNA President Dr. Sherry Greenberg.
Dr. Greenberg discusses her inspiration for becoming a nurse and her decision to specialize in gerontological nursing; her leadership roles within GAPNA; GAPNA’s 40th anniversary mission to preserve the past, enhance the present, and secure the future; and how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted care for older adults and health care in general.
Dr. Sherry Greenberg, PhD, RN, GNP-BC, FGSA, FAANP, FAAN, currently works as an associate professor at Seton Hall University, College of Nursing in Nutley, NJ, and a courtesy appointed associate professor at New York University, Rory Meyers College of Nursing. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the Gerontological Society of America, and the New York Academy of Medicine. She is also a Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing through the National Hartford Center of Gerontological Nursing Excellence. She is a member of the Gerontology and Geriatrics Education editorial board and a peer reviewer for multiple journals. For the past 15 years, Dr. Greenberg has served as editor of the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing’s Try This Series, which highlights evidence-based best practices and approaches for the care of older adults.
Dr. Greenberg has been an active member of GAPNA for many years and was the 2020-2021 GAPNA President. She started her service to the association as a member of the Education Committee and has served in a broad number of roles, including Director-at-Large from 2017-2019.
In addition to her leadership role with GAPNA, Dr. Greenberg has devoted much of her career to gerontological nursing and interprofessional education and practice. She is dedicated to improving the geriatric health care workforce trained to support the growing demand for comprehensive, person-centered age-friendly care to older adults.
Dr. Cassandra Vonnes, DNP, GNP-BC, APRN, AOCNP, CPHQ, FAHA, is the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) Coordinator, Geriatric Oncology, at the Moffitt Cancer Center, in Tampa, FL. She is a member of the Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association Communication Team and is a host of the GAPNA Chat podcast series.
