Dive into the captivating world of Mademoiselle Ixe, a remarkable story by English writer Mary Elizabeth Hawker, who wrote under the pseudonym Lanoe Falconer. After facing numerous rejections from publishers, this tale of a governess in an English country house emerged as a stunning mystery, showcasing an artistic finesse that set it apart from other short stories of its time. The Saturday Review hailed it as one of the finest short stories in England, and it quickly gained immense popularity. Notably, Gladstone praised the book, which faced a ban in Russia, while the likes of Taine admired its depth. Over 40,000 copies of the English editions were sold, alongside translations into French, German, Dutch, and Italian. Despite her limited output due to health challenges, Hawkers works left a lasting impact, with titles such as Cecilia de Noel and Old Hampshire Vignettes. Her life came to a close at a young age due to tuberculosis, yet her literary legacy endures, further immortalized by the 1915 biography penned by Evelyn March Phillipps.
