Dive into the intricate world of Aristotles seminal work, On the Heavens (Greek Περί ουρανού, Latin De Caelo or De Caelo et Mundo). In this enlightening episode, host Geoffrey Edwards unpacks Aristotles groundbreaking arguments for the Earths spherical shape, using lunar eclipses as crucial evidence. Discover his fascinating theory of gravity, which suggests that earthly objects are irresistibly drawn to the universes center, while fiery entities are instinctively pushed away. Edwards also explores the Pythagorean belief in the star-like essence of Earth and the essential role of numerical harmony, alongside Democrituss atomic theories. Join us as we breathe life into these ancient philosophies and illuminate their impact on our understanding of the cosmos.
