20 SET 2019 · You can't just expect time to heal all when it comes to your child and their behavior. Certains things change and fade with time but for the majority of your child's actions and habits, they'll be directly influenced and affected by what you do and don't allow. In today's episode, Joel reveals some lessons she learned and helps figure out ways to gently mold your child towards right behaviors and accident s fro occasions you might not have clearly defined, set in stone rules for.
13 SET 2019 · As a parent, you fight hard to find a family rhythm because what you make time for ultimately shapes what your child will value. In the first few years, parents fight hard to try to find a rhythm. In the pre-school and early elementary years, parents hone the rhythm to a pretty fine science with school, homework, church, sports, bedtime routines and other activities creating a pretty predictable pattern.
But as kids push the double digit birthdays, a significant shift start to happen:
They go to friends houses with your blessing but without you.
They have sports, activities and school projects that expand their world.
They develop interests that may reflect their personality – not necessarily yours
As we said earlier this week, a key step is to ensure that you as a parent don’t withdraw even if it feels like your son or daughter is withdrawing from you. And I made some other shifts that helped. I believe teens need as much attention from their parents as toddlers do. Simply being around can be a game changer with teens. When you have time, relationship can happen. And when a relationship happens, you can build into them spiritually and emotionally in ways you never could without that relationship.
How about you? What are you learning about rhythm as your kids are growing up?
6 SET 2019 · Setting limits with kids means setting a guideline for behavior—even when there’s not an official household rule. Since you can’t set a rule about everything, limits are those spur of the moment guidelines that are situational.
Setting limits can be tough for several reasons. Sometimes parents feel guilty about saying no. Or, they want to avoid a temper tantrum that will surely erupt when a child is told of a limit. And of course, partners don't always agree on what limits to set with kids.
But limits are good for kids. It teaches them appropriate behavior and gives them opportunities to sharpen some of their skills.
30 AGO 2019 · Successful parents encourage healthy behaviors, attitudes, and worldviews. Parenting is a thinking man’s game. It takes energy, strategy, and intentionality. Yet, many parents are unwilling to give it the attention that it deserves. As a result, their children become shaped by the world around them rather than by the parents who love them. Successful parents do not just discourage unhealthy habits, they also intentionally encourage positive habits. They envision the type of person they would like their children to become. They consistently model that behavior for them. They speak lofty expectations into their childrens’ lives. They think the best of their children. They provide opportunities for their children to learn valuable life lessons. And they praise positive habits both privately and publicly.
4 DIC 2018 · Marriage can be hard, arguments are bound to ensue, and negative emotions will arise.
