6 AGO 2024 · To kick off the month of August we are having Kelsey O'Connor on the show. Kelsey was a NC State student and softball athlete. But unfortunately during her Junior year she sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury. Which meant softball was now forever over, and she was on the brink of even keeping up as a student. Kelsey struggled to speak without frequent stuttering, pausing, confusion, and therefore couldn’t even prove myself through performance, academic or otherwise, of any kind. The external labels had built her entire identity around were broken, crumbled to the core, and was left with all of the pieces of who she used to be and unsure how to rebuild. After her recovery for several months, and finding the "new" her, she completed the University Honors Program, was a Dean’s Scholar and a High Impact Achievement Award recipient, both from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences! Then on top of that- Kelsey was chosen as the commencement student speaker for her graduation. 4 GIU 2024 · To kick off the month of June, we are having Gemma Herbertson calling in from the U.K. That is right, the U.K.! Gemma is the founder of Neuro Frontiers. The seeds of this initiative started in early 2014 when searching for answers for her then four year-old son, who was recovering from some hefty brain surgery which had left him with a mental age of just a few months. Years of research into what could improve his quality of life brought the revelation that if the brain could be fuelled and stimulated specifically for an individual, there was a much greater chance of that person’s brain being able to function to its optimum; and this had huge ramifications for my son – it gave Gemma hope that he could do more, and that his quality of life could be improved. There was no time to waste – and immediately set out on an amazing journey into the world of Neuroplasticity Therapies – a journey that would change my son’s life, change the quality of our family life, and change my life and career as well.
