Los Angeles Pacific Coast Fishing Report – August 22, 2024Hey, fellow anglers! Here’s your local fishing lowdown for today. Whether you're casting from the shore or heading out on the boat, we’ve got you covered.Weather & Conditions: Today’s shaping up to be a classic SoCal day with clear skies and temps around 78°F. A gentle westerly breeze, clocking in at 8-10 mph, is keeping things cool. The ocean’s relatively calm, so it’s perfect for a day on the water. Sunrise was at 6:19 AM, giving us an early start, and we’ll wrap up the day with a sunset at 7:32 PM.Tides: We’ve got a high tide hitting at 11:56 AM, which is prime time for those of you targeting fish close to shore or around the reefs. Low tide rolled in early at 5:37 AM, with another one coming just after sunset at 6:00 PM. The midday high tide is your best window for hooking into something good, but don’t discount that evening low if you’re still out there when the sun’s dipping below the horizon.Fish Activity: The fish are moderately active today, so be ready to put in a bit of work. Yesterday, the boats brought in a decent haul with limits of rockfish and a smattering of other species. The calico bass bite was decent near the kelp, and a few lucky anglers even nabbed some yellowtail and bonito.Catches: The catch reports from yesterday were solid, especially for those focusing on rockfish—multiple boats hit their limits. We also saw a mix of calico bass, white seabass, and a few sheephead. If you’re after something bigger, a couple of yellowtail and bonito were in the mix too. The kelp beds and reef structures were the hotspots, so target those areas today.Best Bait & Lures: For bait, squid’s been the top choice, especially if you’re targeting rockfish or lingcod. For lures, if you’re chasing bass, try swimbaits in natural colors or jerkbaits if you’re fishing the kelp. For those looking to hook yellowtail, surface irons in blue or white have been doing the trick.Hot Spots: If you’re sticking close to LA, consider hitting the waters off Redondo Beach—the reefs there have been productive for rockfish and bass. Another good spot is the Palos Verdes Peninsula, particularly around the kelp beds where the calico bass have been active. Further south, Long Beach Harbor has been solid for those targeting a mix of species, including yellowtail and bonito. So, gear up and get out there! It’s a beautiful day to fish our Pacific waters. Tight lines, everyone!
